AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE PIN RETENTION IN PIN RETAINED RESTORATIONS

Abstract
The author studied on the retentive properties of cemented pins of various length by means. of Dynamometer. The pins were cemented in dentin with cementing medium such as cavitec, zinc-oxide eugenol cement and zinc phosphate cement. After these cement were set completely the transverse strength were applied and measured retentive force of these pins.
The results were as follows.
1)The amount of retention of three cementing medium was the greatest with zinc phosphate cement, then zinc-oxide eugenol and then cavitec.
2) The retention of the pin also increased as the depth of the pin hole increased 1 to 4mm.
3) In view of the anatomical relationship in tooth structure and clinical implication in restorative dentistry the optimum depth of the pin hole was concluded to be 3mm.
